Beta Hydroxy Acids (BHAs) are a class of chemical exfoliants, the most common BHA is Salicylic Acid.  BHAs promote cell turnover and are primarily used to treat acne and sun damage. The most common type is Salicylic Acid.

Salicylic Acid is a lipophilic (oil attracting) substance that can penetrate oily skin and clogged pores. It is particularly effective in treating acne as it helps exfoliate the skin, unclog pores and reduce inflammation.

BHAs work by exfoliating the outer layer of the skin, encouraging the shedding of dead skin cells, this process promotes skin renewal, leading to a smoother complexion. With anti-inflammatory properties that help to reduce redness and irritation BHA’s can help to achieve a more even skin tone.

A more gentle option than other ingredients like retinoids, BHAs have anti-ageing benefits because they promote skin renewal which addresses fine lines and wrinkles.

Acne

BHAs are especially beneficial for individuals with acne-prone skin. Salicylic acid can penetrate into the pores, dissolving excess sebum and preventing the formation of acne lesions. It is also effective in reducing blackheads and whiteheads.
